Five years after we were married, Cushla developed a strange and inexplicable illness that she bore for 17 years. Despite many more trials and setbacks, including losing loved ones and suffering a late-term miscarriage, when we lost our only child, Meera Therese, Cushla was the happiest person I knew. And, although my sparkle had waned somewhat, I still had lots of energy and ambition and became an award-winning marketer and serial entrepreneur. But, the more ‘success’ I experienced, the more I felt a growing sense of dissatisfaction. I began to see through the emptiness of worldly accomplishments. I also noticed that very few people I met were really happy. It didn’t matter if they were successful, wealthy or famous. Indeed, I could see these things often brought even more distress into their lives.
In contrast to all this, Cushla’s light shone more than ever. She had inner peace, joy and freedom, which brought enormous comfort to many.
What is Cushla doing that others aren’t? I asked myself, though I already knew the answer. It was staring me in the face: she was highly disciplined in her spiritual and religious practices. Inspired by her beliefs and extraordinary mystical gifts, I began to climb the spiritual mountain with her. I soon needed all the strength given to me from above when we both had a dramatic vision in which Cushla was asked to suffer for a higher purpose. Shortly afterwards, she was diagnosed with terminal cancer but faced her imminent death with serenity and absolute fearlessness.
Inspired by Cushla’s amazing legacy of hopefulness, equanimity and fearlessness in the face of seemingly insurmountable adversity, I decided to start The Unbroken Way. I also plan to publish her story, The Unknown Mystic, in due course.
